Diwali, the festival of lights, is observed on the Amavasya of Kartik — the darkest night of the lunar month — and falls this year in the October–November 2026 season. The main Lakshmi Puja is performed during the Pradosh Kala after sunset on Amavasya night, ideally while the Sthira (fixed) lagna of Vrishabha rises — the tradition’s way of asking that the Goddess who arrives should also stay. It is no accident that Lakshmi is invoked on Amavasya. The teaching is precise: light is not celebrated when it is easy, and abundance is not a fair-weather guest. The row of diyas — deepavali — declares that a household keeps its own light burning regardless of what the sky provides. Lakshmi, the tradition says, visits homes that are clean, peaceful, and lit — outer order and inner order together.
The festival unfolds over five days: Dhanteras, when new metal is brought home and Lord Dhanvantari is remembered; Naraka Chaturdashi (Chhoti Diwali), the oil-bath dawn of release from old burdens; Lakshmi Puja on Amavasya, the heart of the festival; Govardhan Puja, honouring Krishna’s lifting of the hill; and Bhai Dooj, sealing the season with the brother-sister bond.
1. Clean first — truly. The pre-Diwali cleaning is itself ritual: clear the entrance especially, for that is where the Goddess is welcomed with rangoli and a row of diyas.
2. Set the altar. Lakshmi is worshipped with Ganesha (wisdom must govern wealth) and Kubera, the treasurer. Place the kalash, offer lotus or red flowers, kheel-batasha, and light a ghee lamp that burns through the night.
3. Take sankalp before asking. State your name and gotra, and dedicate the puja — not to money alone, but to shubh-labh: auspicious gain, wealth that carries wellbeing with it.
4. Recite the Shri Sukta or chant. The Shri Sukta is the oldest hymn to Lakshmi; if it is unfamiliar, chant Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah 108 times with a steady mind.
5. Open the books. Traders traditionally place their account books before the Goddess — chopda pujan — and open the new year’s. Every household can adapt this: review the year’s finances honestly before the lamp, and resolve how the next year’s earning and giving will look.
