Krishna Janmashtami marks the birth of Shri Krishna on the Ashtami tithi of the Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada, under the Rohini Nakshatra, at midnight. This year it falls in early September 2026 — and because the observance depends on when the Ashtami tithi and Rohini Nakshatra prevail at midnight in your city, always confirm the exact day on your local panchang; neighbouring regions sometimes even observe it a day apart, and both are correct for their tradition.
Krishna was born in a prison, in the dead of night, in the middle of a storm — at the precise moment the world felt most hopeless. The midnight birth is the festival’s central teaching: grace does not wait for convenient circumstances. Devotees fast through the day and keep vigil until midnight, when the Nishita Kala puja is performed — the deity is bathed in panchamrit, dressed anew, rocked in a cradle, and welcomed with the singing of bhajans. The fast is traditionally broken after this puja.
1. Keep the fast your body can keep. The shastras honour intention over severity — a phalahar fast of fruits and milk is fully traditional. Elders, children, and anyone unwell should eat as needed; the real fast is of the mind, from anger and untruth, for the whole day.
2. Prepare the cradle. Clean the altar, place baby Krishna — Laddu Gopal — in a small decorated cradle, and keep his abhishek items ready: panchamrit (milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar), new clothes, a peacock feather, and tulsi leaves, which are dear to him in every offering.
3. Spend the evening in his stories. Read the tenth skandha of the Shrimad Bhagavatam, or simply tell the children about the butter thief and the lifting of Govardhan. Janmashtami is the year’s best doorway for passing bhakti to the next generation.
4. At midnight, welcome him. Perform the abhishek, offer the chhappan bhog if you have prepared it — or simply makhan-mishri, which he loves best — do the aarti, and rock the cradle. Chant Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya 108 times.
5. Give as Yashoda gave. Feed someone the next day — a child, a cow, anyone in need. Krishna’s childhood was nourished by a village’s open-handedness; the festival is complete when yours reaches beyond your own door.
Janmashtami is also the festival of divine love — Krishna is never worshipped far from Radha, and their names are joined before his own.
