According to the Hindu calendar, Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated on the Chaturthi tithi of the bright half of the month of Bhadrapada. Beyond marking the birth of Shri Ganesha, this ten-day festival reawakens our dormant spiritual instincts, as devotees dedicate themselves to the Lord’s seva and prayer.
In 2026, Ganesh Chaturthi falls in September, on the Chaturthi tithi of the Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada — about ten to twelve days after Krishna Janmashtami. The most auspicious time for Ganapati sthapana and puja is the madhyahna muhurat — the midday period, traditionally regarded as the time of the Lord’s birth. Confirm the exact day and muhurat for your city on the panchang, as tithi timings shift with location.
The festival concludes with Anant Chaturdashi, on Anant Chaturdashi tithi about ten days later, when the murti is lovingly immersed. The visarjan is not a goodbye — it is the dissolution of obstacles and ego that the Lord takes with him.
1. Begin with a true sankalp. Before the sthapana, sit quietly and state one clear intention — not a list of demands, but one honest resolve you are willing to work for. Ganesha is Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles, but he responds most to a devotee who names the obstacle honestly.
2. Offer modak, practise moderation. The modak in the Lord’s hand is sweetness earned through effort — the rice flour shell holding the jaggery within. Offer 21 modaks if you can, and alongside it, give up one small indulgence for the ten days. The offering outside becomes tapas inside.
3. Chant with count, not with hurry. Recite Om Gan Ganapataye Namah 108 times each morning of the festival. Ten days of steady japa builds a rhythm that outlasts the festival — many devotees find the practice simply continues on its own.
4. Write down your obstacles, then release them. A beautiful modern seva: each day, write one obstacle — a fear, a grudge, a habit — on a slip of paper and place it near the Lord. On visarjan day, dissolve the slips in water with the murti. What you consciously surrender, you stop unconsciously carrying.
5. Do seva that no one sees. Ganesha wrote the entire Mahabharata as a scribe, asking nothing but that the telling never stop. In his spirit, do one act of quiet service daily during the festival — feed someone, teach someone, help without announcing it.
May Bappa remove every obstacle on your path this year. If you wish to invoke Shri Ganesha with a complete traditional ritual performed in your name, you can book a Ganesha puja for removing obstacles online.
